Oval Fishes Platter

Oval Fishes Platter

“Fish big and small. I had many a swim lessons growing up and competed on my high school swim team. Most of my swimming experienced has taken place in the outdoors in mother natures swimming pool. I have canoed and kayaked across many a lake and down many a river. My love for the water can not be measured. I still recall my first encounters with fish. I was barely grade school age and wading out into a lake in Minnesota. I can still hear my fathers chuckle when I squealed with glee, “Dad! There’s fish in the lake!” It was and is magical.

The design on this platter was created by using a technique called sgrafitto. Sgrafitto is a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface, slip or underglaze in ceramics, to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting color clay body, before firing. It is a technique used in many parts of the world. It was popularized in Italy in the 15th and 16th century. In this collection, each platter is hand built and  hand carved by Ms. Vittitoe.
