“I grow my own vegetables when weather permits. I am a minimalist gardener and grow everything we eat organically. When Fall harvest arrives I preserve it by canning, freezing and drying. For me, there is something fascinating about what’s above and below the ground.”
The design on this bowl was created by using a technique called sgrafitto. Sgrafitto is a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface, slip or underglaze in ceramics, to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting color clay body, before firing. It is a technique used in many parts of the world. It was popularized in Italy in the 15th and 16th century. In this collection, each bowl is hand built and hand carved by Ms. Vittitoe.
